Lady Beetle Clip Art – How to identify a Lady Beetle in your Garden?

Today we are going to step into your garden and look for the common Lady Beetle, which is also know as the Asian Lady Beetle. Its scientific name is Harmonia axyridis form succinea, and they are the easiest Lady Beetle for kids to identify, because of their white markings on their head (pronotum).

Take a close look at your Lady Beetle it should be either red, or yellow-orange. If there are several on the one plant, you’ll notice that some might be really dark in color and others light in color.

Also look at its spots, they will vary in size, but also the number of spots they will have on their backs. Normally their spots can vary from 0 to 22. You will also notice that no two Lady Beetles are alike. Just like us, we are unique.

This is really important!!!!! HAVE I GOT YOUR ATTENTION? Your Lady Beetle must have white markings on its head, this part of its body is called the pronotum. When you look at the black part left on it’s head you should notice that it looks like the letter “M” or “W” depending on which way your facing the beetle.

Lady Beetle, Lady Bug or Ladybirds Clip Art

With all things beautiful in the garden, I was wondering if any of you have seen small domed-shaped red beetles with black spots in your garden, just like my Lady Bugs, Ladybirds or Lady Beetle Clip Art image?

With so many names they have been given it can get a little confusing, especially for kids, so do you call them Lady Bugs, Ladybirds or Lady Beetles? Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret, not many adults know either.

They are actually a beetle, and their common name that Biologists like to call them is a Lady Beetle, or an Asian Lady Beetle. If you love Lady beetles, this is a great place to start learning all about them!

Lady Beetles come from the Coccinellidae family of beetles, and there are over 5,000 species worldwide, that’s a lot of beetles! Thankfully they don’t look all the same. With various colors, shapes, sizes and distinct markings, like spots on their body or heads this will help you identify the genus and species it belongs to.

This type of dome-shaped beetle comes from the species Harmonia axyridis, and it comes in three main forms: red to yellow-orange color with black spots (succinea); black with four red spots (spectabilis); or black with two red spots (conspicua).

Most of us tend to take notice of the common Lady Beetle with the white spots on its head and it glaring color of red to orange-yellow, but you may be lucky in identifying Harmonia axyridis form spectabilis, which is the black Lady Beetle with four red spots.
